"This superb Beechworth chardonnay has mineral, struck match and yeasty mystery with a luxurious undercurrent of fruits and oak. The palate has creamy richness with superb finesse, finishing long and dry."
Ralph Kyte-Powell,
The Age Epicure

2011 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay.
"Wow. This is the greatest Giaconda chardonnay I can recall, showing immense power and scintillating, tight-wound complexity; it's a thrill to taste. Flinty and breathtaking minerally accents..."
Nick Stock,
The Age Good Wine Guide

2010 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay.
"...The best chardonnay yet made in Australia. Profoundly complex, mineral and textured, with layers of depth and flavour, the 2010 Giaconda is perfectly balanced and should age superbly. For the Burgundy-focused, it's evocative of Coche-Dury - at its best."
Jeremy Oliver, The Australian
Wine Annual 2013

2010 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay.

Giaconda Estate Vineyard Chardonnay

Our Estate Vineyard Chardonnay is planted on the cooler south-facing exposure. The wine is fully barrel fermented with approximately 30% new French oak and allowed to go through Malolactic fermentation, which adds more complexity and structure. This wine is aged in barrel for 22 months, deep underground in our granite maturation cave.

"...Vibrant green; the power and extreme complexity of the bouquet literally leap out of the glass, yet the palate lifts the bar further, eerily like a Grand Cru White Burgundy - Chevalier Montrachet comes to mind. The mouthfeel is staggeringly deep, yet full of energy, driving the wine through to an exceptionally long finish."
James Halliday, Wine Companion
2014 Edition

2011 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay.

2012 Tasting notes: A deep hue of green and gold defines this wine - one of intensity and depth. Aromas of peach, oatmeal, subtle notes of charred peat, seasoned by complex lees derived characters ('the good dirt') with flashes of matchstick. The palate has intense fruit power in the spectrum of nectarine to peach stone fruits is deftly laced with complex seasoned oak that adds a zesty orange rind and ginger component to the wine. Powerful and long, the 2012 will be more immediately appealing given the sheer unadulterated intensity of the wine. This wine is an essay in depth and balance.

2013 *En Primeur barrel tasting notes:
Vibrant green and gold in colour. The aroma of gun flint and 'old Giaconda dirt', the good type that adds a further dimension to white stone fruit aromas that are spiced with citrus rind aromatics. Brings back memories of the early 90s wines, especially '91 and '92, with the taste of granite and quartz bringing a minerality to the end palate. In a way this wine is a bit retro - memories of the early 90s with the funk of more recent years.

2011 Tasting notes (sold out): Once again, recent tastings have have exceeded my expectations. A signature nose of matchstick and meal with powerful underlying minerality. Like 2010 this wine reflects many characters from some of best vintages of the 90s. A very powerful palate, tight and racy. Wonderfully subtle fruit, well integrated with complex secondary characters, fine acidity and great length. This wine will develop into a real classic, quite in the style of traditional Burgundy. This wine will have great longevity - especially under screwcap closure.

There has been some discussion in the wine press recently regarding 'what is true minerality.' This wine should help those who taste it understand!

2010 Tasting notes (sold out): Our first Chardonnay completely fermented and aged underground in our cave. This means a slower and more even ageing process, combined with the cooler season this has resulted in a wine with very long ageing potential. The wine has a signature nose of matchstick and meal with powerful underlying minerality. While similar in style to 2008 this wine is a little more racy with slightly less oak showing at this stage. The palate is highly refined and harks back to some of our best vintages from the 90s. The fruit is powerful but very well integrated with the other components.

2008 Tasting notes (sold out): The nose has typical Giaconda characters with hints of meal; matchstick and minerals with overtones of toasty oak. The 2008 while slightly more refined and elegant (due to earlier picking in cooler conditions) combines all the best aspects of the 04; 05 and 06 vintages and still maintains the length and power on the finish which is a Giaconda hallmark. This could be the most refined Giaconda Chardonnay for years, but still embodies the usual drive and power.
